* Public sector banks to achieve a target of 15 per cent as outstanding loans to minority communities under priority sector lending at the earliest.

Housing Sector Finance

* Existing scheme of interest subvention of 1 per cent on housing loan further liberalised.

* Existing housing loan limit enhanced to Rs. 25 lakh for dwelling units under priority sector lending.

* Provision under Rural Housing Fund enhanced to Rs. 3,000 crore.

* To enhance credit worthiness of economically weaker sections and LIG households, a Mortgage Risk Guarantee Fund to be created under Rajiv Awas Yojana.

* Central Electronic Registry to prevent frauds involving multiple lending on the same immovable property to become operational by March 31, 2011.

Financial Sector Legislative Reforms Commission

* Financial Sector Legislative Reforms Commission set up to rewrite and streamline the financial sector laws, rules and regulations.

* Companies Bill to be introduced in the Lok Sabha during current session.

AGRICULTURE

* Removal of production and distribution bottlenecks for items like fruits and vegetables, milk, meat, poultry and fish to be the focus of attention this year.

* Allocation under Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY) increased from Rs. 6,755 crore to Rs. 7,860 crore.

Bringing Green Revolution to Eastern Region

* To improve rice based cropping system in this region, allocation of Rs. 400 crore has been made.

Integrated Development of 60,000 pulses villages in rainfed areas

* Allocation of Rs. 300 crore to promote 60,000 pulses villages in rainfed areas.

Promotion of Oil Palm

* Allocation of Rs. 300 crore to bring 60,000 hectares under oil palm plantations.

* Initiative to yield about 3 lakh Metric tonnes of palm oil annually in five years.

Initiative on Vegetable Clusters

* Allocation of Rs. 300 crore for implementation of vegetable initiative to provide quality vegetable at competitive prices.

Nutri-cereals

* Allocation of Rs. 300 crore to promote higher production of Bajra, Jowar, Ragi and other millets, which are highly nutritious and have several medicinal properties.

National Mission for Protein Supplement

* Allocation of Rs. 300 crore to promote animal based protein production through livestock development, dairy farming, piggery, goat rearing and fisheries.

Accelerated Fodder Development Programme

* Allocation of Rs. 300 crore for Accelerated Fodder Development Programme to benefit farmers in 25,000 villages.

National Mission for Sustainable Agriculture

* Government to promote organic farming methods, combining modern technology with traditional farming practices.

Agriculture Credit

* Credit flow for farmers raised from Rs. 3,75,000 crore to Rs. 4,75,000 crore in 2011-12.

* Interest subvention proposed to be enhanced from 2 per cent to 3 per cent for providing short-term crop loans to farmers who repay their crop loan on time.

* In view of enhanced target for flow of agriculture credit, capital base of NABARD to be strengthened by Rs. 3,000 crore in phased manner.

* Rs. 10,000 crore to be contributed to NABARD’s Short-term Rural Credit fund for 2011-12.

Mega Food Parks

* Approval being given to set up 15 more Mega Food Parks during 2011-12.

Storage Capacity and Cold Chains

* Augmentation of storage capacity through private entrepreneurs and warehousing corporations has been fast tracked.

* Capital investment in creation of modern storage capacity will be eligible for viability gap funding of the Finance Ministry.

Agriculture Produce Marketing Act

* In view of recent episode of inflation, need for State Governments to review and enforce a reformed Agriculture Produce Marketing Act.

Infrastructure and Industry

* Allocation of Rs. 2,14,000 crore for infrastructure in 2011-12. This is an increase of 23.3 per cent over 2010-11. This also amounts to 48.5 per cent of total plan allocation.

* Government to come up with a comprehensive policy for further developing PPP projects.

* IIFCL to achieve cummulative disbursement target of Rs. 20,000 crore by March 31, 2011 and Rs. 25,000 crore by March 31, 2012.

* Under take out financing scheme, seven projects sanctioned with debt of Rs. 1,500 crore. Another Rs. 5,000 crore will be sanctioned during 2011-12.

* To boost infrastructure development, tax free bonds of Rs. 30,000 crore proposed to be issued by Government undertakings during 2011-12.

National Manufacturing Policy

* Share of manufacturing in GDP expected to grow from about 16 per cent to 25 per cent over a period of 10 years. Government will come out with a manufacturing policy.

* Two Committees set up for greater transparency and accountability in procurement policy; and for allocation, pricing and utilisation of natural resources.

* Issues relating to reconciliation of environmental concern from various departmental activities including those related to infrastructure and mining to be considered by a Group of Ministers.

* National Mission for hybrid and electric vehicle to be launched.

* Financial Assistance to be made available for metro projects in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata and Chennai.

* Capital investment in fertiliser production proposed to be included as an infrastructure sub-sector.

Exports

* Of 23 suggestions made by Task Force on Transaction Cost, constituted by the Department of Commerce, 21 suggestions already implemented. Action to be taken on the remaining two suggestions. Transaction Cost of Rs. 2,100 crore will thus be mitigated.

* Self assessment to be introduced in Customs to modernize the Customs administration.

* Proposal to introduce scheme for refund of taxes paid on services used for export of goods.

* Mega Cluster Scheme to be extended for leather products. Seven mega leather clusters to be set up during 2011-12.

* Jodhpur to be included for the development of a handicraft mega cluster.

BLACK MONEY

* Five fold strategy to be put into operation to deal with the problem of generation and circulation of black money.

* Membership of various international fora engaged in anti money laundering, Financial integrity and Economic development, Exchange of information for tax purposes and transparency, secured.

Various Tax Information Exchange Agreements (TIEA) and Double Taxation

* Avoidance Agreements (DTAA) concluded. Foreign Tax Division of CBDT has been strengthened to effectively handle increase in tax information exchange and transfer pricing issues.

* Enforcement Directorate strengthened three fold to handle increased number of cases registered under amended Money Laundering Legislation.

* Finance Ministry has commissioned study on unaccounted income and wealth held within and outside the country.

* Comprehensive national policy to be announced in near future to strengthen controls over prevention of trafficking on narcotic drugs.

STRENGTHENING INCLUSION

* National Food Security Bill (NFSB) to be introduced in the Parliament during the course of this year.

* Allocation for social sector in 2011-12 (Rs. 1,60,887 crore) increased by 17 per cent over current year. It amounts to 36.4 per cent of total plan allocation.

Bharat Nirman

* Allocation for Bharat Nirman programme proposed to be increased by Rs10,000 crore from the current year to Rs. 58,000 crore in 2011-12.

* Plan to provide Rural Broadband Connectivity to all 2,50,000 Panchayats in the country in three years.

MGNREGA

* In pursuance of last years budget announcement to provide a real wage of Rs100 per day, the Government has decided to index the wage rates notified under the

* MGNREGA to the Consumer Price Index for Agricultural Labour. The enhanced wage rates have been notified by the Ministry of Rural Development on January 14, 2011.

* From 1st April, 2011, remuneration of Anganwadi workers increased from Rs1,500 per month to Rs. 3,000 per month and for Anganwadi helpers from Rs. 750 per month to Rs. 1,500 per month.

Scheduled Castes and Tribal Sub-plan

* Specific allocation earmarked towards Schedule Castes Sub-plan and Tribal Sub-plan in the Budget.

* Allocation for primitive Tribal groups increased from Rs. 185 crore in 2010-11 to Rs. 244 crore in 2011-12.

Education

* Allocation for education increased by 24 per cent over current year.

Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan

* Rs. 21,000 crore allocated, which is 40 per cent higher than Budget for 2010-11.

* Pre-matric scholarship scheme to be introduced for needy SC/ST students studying in classes IX and X.

National Knowledge Network

* Connectivity to all 1,500 institutions of Higher Learning and Research through optical fiber backbone to be provided by March, 2012.

Innovations

* National Innovation Council set up to prepare road map for innovations in India.

* Special grant provided to various universities and academic institutions to recognise excellence.

Skill Development

* Additional Rs. 500 crore proposed to be provided for National Skill Development Fund during the next year.

* An international award with prize money of Rs. 1 crore being instituted for promoting values of universal brotherhood as part of National celebrations of 150th Birth Anniversary of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore.

Health

* Plan allocations for health stepped-up by 20 per cent.

* Scope of Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana to be expanded to widen the coverage.

Financial Inclusion

* Target of providing banking facilities to all 73,000 habitations having a population of over 2,000 to be completed during 2011-2012.

Unorganised sector

* Exit norms under co-contributory pension scheme “Swavalamban” to be relaxed.

* Benefit of Government contribution to be extended from three to five years for all subscribers who enroll during 2010-11 and 2011-12.

* Eligibility for pension under Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension Scheme for BPL beneficiaries reduced from 65 years of age to 60 years. Those above 80 years of age will get pension of Rs. 500 per month instead of Rs. 200 at present.

Environment and Climate Change

Forests

* Rs. 200 crore proposed to be allocated for Green India Mission from National Clean Energy Fund.

Environmental Management

* Rs. 200 crore proposed to be allocated for launching Environmental Remediation Programmes from National Clean Energy Fund.

Cleaning of Rivers and Lakes

* Special allocation of Rs. 200 crore proposed to be provided for clean-up of some more important lakes and rivers other than Ganga.

Some Other Initiatives

* To boost development in North Eastern Region and Special Category States, allocation for Special Assistance doubled.

* Rs. 8,000 crore provided in current year for development needs of Jammu and Kashmir.

* Allocation made in 2011-12 to meet the infrastructure needs for Ladakh (Rs. 100 crore) and Jammu region (Rs. 150 crore).

* Allocation under Backward Regions Grant Fund increased by over 35 per cent.

* Funds allocated under Integrated Action Plan (IAP) for addressing problems related to Left Wing extremism affected districts. 60 selected Tribal and backward districts provided with 100 per cent block grant of Rs. 25 crore and Rs. 30 crore per district during 2010-11 and 2011-12 respectively.

* A lump-sum ex-gratia compensation of Rs. 9 lakh for 100 per cent disability to be granted for personnel of Defence and Para Military forces discharged from service on medical ground on account of disability attributable to government service.

* Provision of Rs. 1,64,415 crore, including Rs. 69,199 crore for capital expenditure to be made for Defence Services in 2011-12.

* To build judicial infrastructure, plan provision for Department of Justice increased by three fold to Rs. 1,000 crore.

Census 2011

* To enumerate castes other than Schedule Castes and Schedule Tribes in Census 2011, ‘caste’ to be canvassed as a separate time bound exercise.

IMPROVING GOVERNANCE

UID Mission

* From 1st October, 2011 ten lakh Aadhaar numbers will be generated per day.

IT Initiatives

* Various IT initiatives taken for efficient tax administration. These include e-filing and e-payment of taxes, adoption of ‘Sevottam’ concept by CBEC and CBDT, web based facility for tax payers to track the resolution of refunds and credit for pre-paid taxes and augmentation of processing capacity.

* Under Mission mode projects, funds released to 31 projects received from States/ UTs for computerisation of Commercial taxes. This will allow States to align with roll out of GST.

* Bill to amend the Indian Stamp Act proposed to be introduced shortly.

* A new scheme with an outlay of Rs. 300 crore to be launched to provide assistance to States to modernise their stamp and registration administration and roll out e-stamping in all the districts in the next three years.

* A new simplified form ‘Sugam’ to be introduced to reduce the compliance burden of small tax payers falling within presumptive taxation.

* Three more benches of Settlement Commission to be set up to fast track the disposal of cases.

* Steps initiated to reduce litigation and focus attention on high revenue cases.

Corruption

* Group of Ministers constituted to consider measures for tackling corruption.

* Performance Monitoring and Evaluation System

* In pursuance of recommendations of Second Administrative Reforms

BUDGET ESTIMATES 2011-12

* Gross Tax receipts are estimated at Rs. 9,32,440 crore.

* Non-tax revenue receipts estimated at Rs. 1,25,435 crore.

* Total expenditure proposed at Rs. 12,57,729 crore.

* Increase of 18.3 per cent in total Plan allocation.

* Increase of 10.9 per cent in the Non-plan expenditure.

* XI Plan expenditure more than 100 per cent in nominal terms than envisaged for the Plan period.

* Increase of 23 per cent in Plan and Non-plan transfer to States and UTs.

PART B TAX PROPOSALS

Direct Taxes

* Exemption limit for the general category of individual taxpayers enhanced from

* Rs. 1,60,000 to Rs. 1,80,000 giving uniform tax relief of Rs. 2,000.

* Exemption limit enhanced and qualifying age reduced for senior citizens.

* Higher exemption limit for Very Senior Citizens, who are 80 years or above.

* Current surcharge of 7.5 per cent on domestic companies proposed to be reduced to 5 per cent.

* Rate of Minimum Alternative Tax proposed to be increased from 18 per cent to 18.5 per cent of book profits.

* Tax incentives extended to attract foreign funds for financing of infrastructure.

* Additional deduction of Rs. 20,000 for investment in long-term infrastructure bonds proposed to be extended for one more year.

* Lower rate of 15 per cent tax on dividends received by an Indian company from its foreign subsidiary.

* Benefit of investment linked deduction extended to businesses engaged in the production of fertilisers.

* Investment linked deduction to businesses developing affordable housing.

* Weighted deduction on payments made to National Laboratories, Universities and Institutes of Technology to be enhanced to 200 per cent.

* System of collection of information from foreign tax jurisdictions to be strengthened.

* A net revenue loss of Rs. 11,500 crore estimated as a result of proposals.

Indirect Taxes

* To stay on course for transition to GST.

* Central Excise Duty to be maintained at standard rate of 10 per cent.

* Reduction in number of exemptions in Central Excise rate structure.

* Nominal Central Excise Duty of 1 per cent imposed on 130 items entering in the tax net.

* Lower rate of Central Excise Duty enhanced from 4 per cent to 5 per cent.

* Optional levy on branded garments or made up proposed to be converted into a mandatory levy at unified rate of 10 per cent.

* Peak rate of Custom Duty held at its current level.

Agriculture and Related Sectors

* Scope of exemptions from Excise Duty enlarged to include equipments needed for storage and warehouse facilities on agricultural produce.

* Basic Custom Duty reduced for specified agricultural machinery from 5 per cent to 2.5 per cent.

* Basic Custom Duty reduced on micro-irrigation equipment from 7.5 per cent to 5 per cent.

* De-oiled rice bran cake to be fully exempted from basic Custom Duty. Export

* Duty of 10 per cent to be levied on its export.

Manufacturing Sector

* Basic Custom Duty reduced for various items to encourage domestic value addition vis-à-vis imports, to remove duty inversion and anomalies and to provide a level playing field to the domestic industry.

* Rate of Export Duty for all types of iron ore enhanced and unified at 20 per cent ad valorem. Full exemption from Export Duty to iron ore pellets.

* Basic Custom Duty on two critical raw materials of cement industry viz. petcoke and gypsum is proposed to be reduced to 2.5 per cent.

* Cash dispensers fully exempt from basic Customs Duty.

Environment

* Full exemption from basic Customs Duty and a concessional rate of Central

* Excise Duty extended to batteries imported by manufacturers of electrical vehicles.

* Concessional Excise Duty of 10 per cent to vehicles based on Fuel cell technology.

* Exemption granted from basic custom duty and special CVD to critical parts/assemblies needed for Hybrid vehicles.

* Reduction in Excise Duty on kits used for conversion of fossil fuel vehicles into Hybrid vehicles.

* Excise Duty on LEDs reduced to 5 per cent and special CVD being fully exempted.

* Basic Customs Duty on solar lantern reduced from 10 to 5 per cent.

* Full exemption from basic Customs Duty to Crude Palm Stearin used in manufacture of laundry soap.

* Full exemption from basic Excise Duty granted to enzyme based preparation for pre-tanning.

Infrastructure

* Parallel Excise Duty exemption for domestic suppliers producing capital goods needed for expansion of existing mega or ultra mega power projects.

* Full exemption from basic Customs Duty to bio-asphalt and specified machinery for application in the construction of national highways.

Other Proposals

* Scope of exemptions from basic Customs Duty for work of art and antiquities extended to apply for exhibition or display in private art galleries open to the general public.

* Exemption from Import Duty for spares and capital goods required for ship repair units extended to import by ship owners.

* Concessional basic Custom Duty of 5 per cent and CVD of 5 per cent available to newspaper establishments for high speed printing presses extended to mailroom equipment.

* Jumbo rolls of cinematographic film fully exempted from CVD by providing full exemption from Excise Duty.

* Out right concession to factory-built ambulances from Excise Duty.

* Relief measures proposed for raw pistachio, bamboo for agarbatti, lactose for the manufacture of homoeopathic medicines, sanitary napkins, baby and adult diapers.

* Proposals relating to Customs and Central Excise estimated to result in a net revenue gain of Rs. 7,300 crore.

Service Tax

* Standard rate of Service Tax retained at 10 per cent, while seeking a closer fit between present regime and its GST successor.

* Hotel accommodation in excess of Rs. 1,000 per day and service provided by air conditioned restaurants that have license to serve liquor added as new services for levying Service Tax.

* Tax on all services provided by hospitals with 25 or more beds with facility of central air conditioning.

* Service Tax on air travel both domestic and international raised.

* Services provided by life insurance companies in the area of investment and some more legal services proposed to be brought into tax net.

* All individual and sole proprietor tax payers with a turn over upto Rs. 60 lakh freed from the formalities of audit.

* To encourage voluntary compliance the penal provision for Service Tax are being rationalised. Similar changes being carried out in Central Excise and Custom laws.

* Proposals relating to Service Tax estimated to result in net revenue gain of Rs. 4,000 crore.

* Proposals relating to Direct Taxes estimated to result in a revenue loss of Rs11,500 crore and those related to Indirect Taxes estimated to result in net revenue gain of Rs. 11,300 crore.

Eros International and Chennai based-Ocher Studios have joined hands to co-produce Rana, superstar Rajnikanth's next movie in which he plays a triple role.

Rana will be directed by K S Ravikumar who in the past has directed the southern superstar's hits such as Muthu and Padayappa.

Scheduled to go on floor in March this year, Rana will be a live action magnum opus with Rajni playing triple role and will be released in Tamil, Hindi and Telugu.

Music would be scored by A R Rahman, Director of Photography would be Ratnavelu, Editing would be done by Antony. The technical and special effects director will be Soundarya Rajnikanth; Charles Darby of Eyeqube Studios -- renowned visual effects luminary and an Emmy award winner -- will be the visual effects supervisor of the film. The film is scheduled to release in early 2012.

Speaking on the development, Sunil Lulla, Managing Director, Eros International Media Ltd said, "Rajni fans will be treated to a triple role essayed by their favourite actor. Rana is going to be far different from any of the recent Rajni films, a complete live action magnum opus with loads of entertainment for his fans."

Soundarya Rajnikanth, Director of Ocher Studios Private Limited, and younger daughter of the filmstar, added, "We are very pleased to announce this partnership with Eros International for Rana. We hope to make a film that will live up to the huge expectations of the movie-goers."

Rajnikanth's last film Robot was a superhit that released in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi, and grossed more than Rs 400 crore worldwide.

Aadukalam - Loser

A loser doesn't know what he'll do if he loses, but talks about what he'll do if he wins, and a winner doesn't talk about what he'll do if he wins, but knows what he'll do if he loses. Aadukalam shows the two sides of a character - happy-go-lucky winner and dare-to-do-anything loser. Vetri gives a pathos end to the lead characters life.

Rathnavelu wants to win the cockfight at least once with his long-time nemesis, Pettaikaaran. Reason - the desire of his mother before she dies. Sadly, he never wins.

Pettaikaaran, a veteran in cock-training who kicks Rathnavelu's butt every time in the challenge, succumbs to his envy and ego, to end as a loser.

Karuppu, who was trained by Pettaikaaran, now the reason for Pettaikaaran's guile is forced to abondon his inhabitant.

Dorai, another understudy of Pettaikaaran loses his loved cocks.

Karuppu's mother wanted to clear the debts on their house passes away before it could happen.

Pettaikaaran's wife, Meena, despit being 25 years younger and madly-in-love with him, abandons because of his mistrust.

So in a way, every character ends with losing their dreams. Vetri gives us an open ending, that can be assumed, they end as losers with only positive being Karupu getting his Anglo-Indian girlfriend, Irene.

Aadukalam - Envy

You can't be envious and happy at the same time. Like Macbeth, to attain credit and victory, characters go to any extreme, thus becoming restless and losing their peace of mind (can be put it as piece of mind too) Rathnavelu kills people, lures members from Pettaikaaran team with lucrative offerings, only to no avail. Karuppu, envy of his success, who when poked 'Afraid of losing eh?' is ready to do anything to show he is a winner personified. Pettaikaaran, jealous of all the fame going to his understudy, couldn’t stand to it and hatches plan to spoil Karuppu's moment so as to get back to his respected days. If you desire glory, you may envy Napoleon, but Napoleon envied Caesar, Caesar envied Alexander, and Alexander, I daresay, envied Hercules, who never existed. If Rathnavelu depicts an outright villain in the first half, Pettaikaaran steals the second half with his cunningness and subtle cruelty. To put it in a word - 'Silent Assassin'. We can draw parallels between Rathnavelu and Pettaikaaran, as how covetousness forces people expose their dark side. The Satan shifts from Rathnavelu to Karuppu's godly figure Pettaikaaran and kudos to Vetrimaaran for enfolding these sequences brilliantly.

Aadukalam - Pluses

Dhanush lived and breathed as Karuppu is an understatement. Aadukalam brings Dhanush back to his old acting prowess and he delivers a knock-out performance. Be it love-bug smitten dude, subservient student, blindly trusting his mentor, Dhanush brings out variety of emotions. The stand out scenes are when Dhanush tells Tapsee about his mother when she is no more and on knowing Pettaikaaran deceived him throughout, Dhanush’s body language was amazing. To my surprise, he mouthed Madurai slang quite brilliantly. The good aspect in Dhanush's acting he never cries out loud where it can be a downside giving humour moments for audiences. The tears, coating his eyes, injects you the agony and sorrow, Karuppu going through. Though the initial expections ‘like Kokki Kumar’ were making waves, Dhanush didn’t show any shadow of Kokki Kumar in this movie. Everything is perfect and worked well for Dhanush (including his physique which was a downside in Pudupettai)

Pettaikaaran is one of the best etched out villains in recent times. It is a complete contrast to the complex Brutus characterisation, because he neither killed Caesar for greed, envy nor to preserve his social position. But here, Pettaikaaran is driven by aforementioned forces, painting grey shades to his character.

No separate comedy track and squeezed songs. Both the comedy and songs gels with the movie's flow, not giving any indications of unnecessary scenes.

Editing - Like Polladavan, the movie unfurls into flashback mode after opening sequences and the initial 10 minutes non-linear sequences, that answers what’s and how’s of cockfight is remarkable. Not forget to mention the cock fight before the interval, that holds your interest and actually from where the movie kick-starts, editing is brilliant

Songs were already a rage among audiences and Vetri didn’t spoil the visual expectations.

Cinematography - The shots are pleasant with natural lightings and no extra gimmicks.

Dialogs, Characterisation - Vetri's template is wonderful. He had a story on board and like chess pieces, placed the characters perfectly. Every character has its own motive and moved uniquely. Right from abuses (there are different abuse words, GVM should take a not who always uses 'Otha'), the dialogs are ideal Madurai dialects.

Aadukalam - Minuses

Dorai (Kishore) - It falls between a weakly written and not much scope characterisation. The initial allures with Rathnavelu, makes you sit up expecting a turn around, but it is let loose. Dorai's characterisation lacked penetration

Irene (Tapsee) - God, this girl is bloody beautiful (sundi vitta ratham varum - bloody :P ) but her lip sync is pathetic and stone faced in many sequences. Though she didn’t have much scenes to show her acting ability, she didn’t even attempt to act in the provided scenes. Just like her character, her performance is nothing worth to write off. Though Divya had less scope in Polladavan she was beautiful plus expressive, but Tapsee is beauty and beauty. Dot!

BGM - GV Prakash might be in Polladavan hangover. At many places, you hear Polladavan BGM's and Thalapathy's Chinna Thaai aval pops in few sequences. This guy was promising in Madraspattinam considering his BGM. Aadukalam is a different ball game, accepted, but he didn’t even deliver 50% of Veyil, another rustic village movie that glorified loser.

Pettaikaaran - His moustache at few places acted as a drawback. I couldnt relate to the dialogs and his lip movements, and also his expressions couldnt be captured. The actor didn’t give completeness to the powerful Pettaikaaran, but I am not saying he is worse :) Good for what should be a great one :)

Open Ending- Vetri ended every character losing something for their love, trust and envy. There is no completeness in finely etched characters. Rathnavelu never appears in second half and you keep guessing what happens to Dorai and Meena once the end credits starts rolling.

Bottom-line - It's not life or death it's a game and at the end of the game there is going to be a winner and a loser. Aadukalam lionizes both and Vetri did prove he is not a one film wonder and stamped his long stay in Kollywood's Aadukalam through his Aadukalam.

Siruthai Film Review

A remake of ‘Vikramarkudu’ (Telugu), with very slight changes to suit Tamil viewers and Karthi’s mannerism. The Telugu version was tailor made for Ravi Teja and I had enough doubts whether Karthi can give such a performance.
Siruthai – never promised to be perfect, but promised to give wholesome entertainement – lot of fights, songs, dance, sentiments and comedy.
Karthi for the first time in dual roles that too in the very early stage of his career had done it with ease. He plays a local youth and a cop.
Rocket Raja (Karthi) and Kaattupoochi (Santhanam) are small time thieves. Rocket Raja falls in love with a beautiful girl (Tamanna). Things starts to change when a kid comes to him claiming to be his son. And there comes Rathnavel Pandian (Karthi).

Karthi just perfectly fits in as both the characters. His graph is still moving very high and with this movie his dream run is just continuing. His second movie with Tamanna, recreates the magic once again. Tammana as sweet innocent girl is very lovable. And Santhanam is back after his successful character in Boss engira Baskaran.
Music: Is good and hummable. BGM is very similar to the Telugu versions.
Cinematography: is good and adds strength in stunt sequences.
Fight: Action sequences are the backbone of the movie along with comedy. The action is composed in style.
Overall: The movie is a good mass entertainer with right mixture of masalas. First half is very hilarious but second half just falls bit low with excess of violence. Too much of Telugu favor is another thing which will catch you.
BO Prediction: Sure winner.

Kaavalan Film Review

After long time I went to the first day first show of a Vijay movie with a lot of expectations. Before I entered the theater I was surprised to see that many came there for Aadukalam as they were not aware of the release of Kaavalan.
Film started with hero's introduction, and yes they did show that hero was a power full guy. Then his dad, who wants to change the life of his son and also to help his friend in some critical position sends vijay to Rajkiran's hometown to be his bodyguard. Like I said, this film begins with an opening song, Vinnai Kaapan Oruvan, which was really irritating, and because of this I lost my confidence even though but fans enjoyed that song. One thing I have to tell here, usually Vijay performs a long jump but this time it was a high jump. After the song vijay saves Rajkiran from villain's group. In that fight sequence, Rajkiran's performance evoked applause from the audience.

Rajkiran's daughter is Asin. Asin and her family friend study in the same college. Rajkiran sends Vijay as her bodyguard into the college. Also vadivel and his to be wife stay in his guest house. From here on we are treated to some utter waste comedy sequences which happen both inside college and in the guest house. Vijay plays a perfect bodyguard and wears ITI uniform, coolers and a cap. He's is very harsh with the two girls.

Then Asin, who doesn't want him to follow her decides to play a prank, and calls him to say that she likes him. Vijay gets angry in beginning and then he too falls in love with the prank caller not knowing that it is Asin who had called him.

Vijay continues his romance through mobile phone. For a second I thought this could be a remake of T Rajendar's Monisha en monalisha oda.

He tells her that he wants to see her face but she duck his request. Feeling guilty, Asin too falls in love with Vijay. Vadivelu's comedy works to an extent in the second half.

Last half an hour, however, is the best part in this film. I could see Thullatha Manamum Thullum Vijay after a long time. The climax is truly one of the best in the history of Tamil cinema. The bike stunt sequence was asusual laughable like every other Vijay film. The back ground score in the climax tugs at your heart, and makes you remember S A Rajkumar's la le la lalaala. Only a couple of songs stay in your memory, the rest of the songs are merely added to fill the space.

Verdict - Go for it!!!

Verdict - Family entertainer.

As a lead up to the impending extravaganza, the trailer of the Rajinikanth starrer magnum opus Endhiran was released on September 11, 2010 all over Tamil Nadu. For the first time, probably in the history of Tamil cinema, the trailer release event was held with much fanfare and witnessed wild frenzy of the superstar’s fans across the state.

Satyam Cinemas played host to the trailer release event that was held in Chennai. The trailer was released by Rajini in the presence of producer and Sun Network’s Kalanidhi Maran. Suffice to say the event was star-studded and Tamil cinema, in its entirety, gathered at Satyam to cheer for the Endhiran team and the superstar himself on the feat. In other parts of Tamil Nadu, hundreds of Rajini fans made sure the event is given its due credit by bursting crackers and bringing the CD of the trailer in procession.

Rajini on Endhiran

“You will see many such interviews and speeches on the movie in the days to come. So I’ll keep this really short,” Rajini started off with his brief speech. While recalling Kalanidhi Maran’s unrelenting cooperation for the movie, Rajini mentioned that Mr. Maran is a very good planner. “Maran realized Shankar’s dream, without which the movie would not have been possible,” he said.

He also reminisced his initial skepticism in starring in a scientist’s role when the story was narrated to him by Shankar. Rajini said he asked Shankar that he has been doing only the roles of blue collared people like auto drivers and laborers. “I have been a conductor. I will only fit in those roles. I have my doubts about playing a scientist. But Shankar plainly asked me to visit the sets. I did obligingly. And the rest is for all to see,” Rajini admitted that he is impressed with Shankar’s talents.

He also mentioned about his doubts on performing the role of a robot. “Shankar did all the homework for me and if you think I’m a pretty good robot in the movie, only Shankar is responsible for it,” he added. As an ending note, Rajini said that he would only act in movies that make the Tamils proud.

Shankar on the highlights of Endhiran

In his speech, Shankar revealed the highlights of his million dollar baby. He detailed the interesting events behind the making of the movie. He stated that; while the trailer underlined the significant highlights of the movie, the movie itself will have hundreds of such scenes. “Rahman has scored three types of music for Endhiran, namely Symphony, Electronics and Indian Style,” Shankar said.
“While Oscar winner Pookkutty’s sound engineering will be poetic, cinematographer Rathnavelu made sure he brought out the handsome Rajini in every frame. The two robots in the movie are art director Sabu Cyril’s creations. To add to this, there is an electronic mosquito in the movie, called Ranguski. Late writer Sujatha came up with the name, incidentally that’s his childhood nick name among his friends”, he said.

He also praised the efforts of lyricist Pa. Vijay, Editor Anthony, Karunas and Santhanam. Shankar revealed that while Rajini played both the characters of the scientist and the robot there is another suspense character in the movie that will appear in the last 45 minutes of the movie.

Vairamuthu

Lyricist Vairamuthu, in his statement, mentioned that Endhiran should be dubbed in English. “Endhiran deserves to be dubbed in English, while we have movies like Avatar, Gladiator and Titanic dubbed in Tamil,” he wished.

Kalanidhi Maran

Mr. Maran declared that Rajini has already become an all India superstar what with the impending release of Endhiran on the cards. He revealed that the trailer was already shown to the Chief Minister who was awed by it.

And joining him is the queen of current Indian female playback singing, Shreya Goshal. Both singers complement each other really well and lift the song very well. A Rahman vintage track, the beats and the instrumentation are in perfect sync and are really attractive to hear. A feel good track, one that can be played on a romantic evening.

A press note from Revathy states: “As the title indicates, the film is a love saga. The moment I finished writing my script, I knew Ayesha would be my first and final choice for the female lead.”

Right from the posters, this movie creates the doubt in you - the grey backgrounds, the monotone images - though representative of the English countryside, do not inspire the thoughts of Robin Hood, the outlaw who has a band of merry men in the Sherwood forest.

The movie opens with Richard the Lion Heart's 10 year Campaign and you see Robin Hood as Robin Longstride, the archer in the army. The movie then goes on expostulate Longstride's character, loyalty to friends, honesty in the face of adversity etc. By a twist of fate, Longstride ends up posing as Sir Robert Loxley to get back to England. Once there, to honor his word, Longstride goes to the actual Loxley home to deliver a family heirloom. During this journey, he realizes his real background, his past and what his future should be and is a part of an English effort to drive the invading French King.

As already noted, the movie underwhelms you at every turn. Since Hollywood has been enamored with origins and the unexplored dark side of popular movie characters or super heroes, the trend continues with Robin Hood as well. I believe the movie should have promoted more as an Origins than as Robin Hood, which led to mismatched expectations, at least from me.

On the casting side, Russell Crowe gives a different interpretation to the popular character and seems earnest and sincere if not playing to the gallery. Cate Blanchett makes a brilliant Lady Marion (a bright spot in the movie). Oscar Issac who plays King John hams a lot and I think has been included for comic effect. As always with Scott's movies, there has been a detailed level of research and analysis into props and facts and backgrounds.

The movie had me looking at the time a couple of times - an indicator that all was not well with the editor when he was doing his work.

On the whole, this movie is a dampner coming from the Scott - Crowe staables!

What Works

• Santhosh Sivan is at his brilliant best. The movie is so aesthetically shot that every frame looks poetic.

• Ash looks stunning (except for one or two shots where she looks her age)!! She starts of screeching though she gradually does her part well especially in certain frames where she brings in a vulnerability to her character. Special mention for the physical effort put in for the movie.

• Ravi Kishan is a complete blast. He is the only one who looks to be having fun in the entire movie. Even in a song sequence where he comes for a few shots, he comes of completely natural.

• The climax sequence is a very well set action piece.

What doesn’t work

• The characterization and the story is way too simplistic. We get the point that Raavan is the hero here and Ram is the villain but its right on your face. Beera is the hunted but he plays the god is completely humane while Dev the hunter is cunning and murderous. There are no ambiguities, no grey shades black is white and white is black.

• The first half is a huge bore. We have several pointless shots and slow mo montages, which neither seem to end nor does it take the movie forward. Tries too hard to be artistic but never transcends to convey anything significant.

• The movies main crux is the change of heart of Ragini. The way she perceives Beera dramatically changes within few shots where nothing really happens between the two characters other than a couple of rounds of hide and seek. IMO it was ridiculous.

• We do get that its an adaptation. But why to make it so obvious? Govindha jumping across the trees was a joke. Sanjeevani doesn’t the name says it all. Poor old Priyamani gets her nose tweaked just to establish that she is Soorpanagai.Top it all was the polygraph test. Huh !! Wasn’t subtleness Mani’s biggest strength ?

• There is absolutely no chemistry established between any of the three main characters, which makes us completely non-interested in any of the three.

On the fence:

• Abhishek does his part well except for a few flashes of brilliance he comes off as trying too hard.

• It was refreshing to see Govindha in a different role but unfortunately doesn’t get much scope.

• In Vikram’s first Bollywood outing he comes of confident and has a great screen presence but has nothing significant to do on screen.

• Except for ‘Behne De’ and a few BGMs here and there you will never realize it was ARR at the helm.

Verdict:

A huge disappointment. Undoubtedly this one is MainRatnam’s weakest, blandest, simplest movie till date. Give me his unpretentious roller coaster non-brainer of a movie ‘Thiruda Thiruda’ any day over this.

First things first. 'Raavanan' is not what everyone thought so. It isn't a contemporary adaptation of Ramayana. Instead, it's the Valmiki's epic meeting Shakespeare's Othello. The master filmmaker Mani Ratnam has apparently taken inspiration from these greatest works to narrate a gripping story in his own inimitable style.

'Raavanan', right from the day it went to floors, has been rising a huge hype and hoopla. And expectations soared a never before high before its release. Does the end product lived up to all? To this question, the answer is- With a huge star cast chipping in with their best, mesmerising shots, crisp editing and riveting music, 'Raavanan' ends up satisfying the appetite of the masses.

All credits to Mani for rendering a movie that is engrossing and entertaining from the very word go. With Vikram around, his job seems to have simplified. The duo end up giving sheen and shine to every scene, which unfolds at good pace. With the best of best in the business like A R Rahman (music) and Santosh Sivan (cinematography) joining hands with Mani, the battle seems to have been won even before it began.

If Mani can be considered the captain of the team, it's Vikram who helps make all his dream a reality. As Veera, he comes out with one of his finest performances. He is not just ruthless, but at times emotional, sentimental and humourous. Veera is an epitome of emotions, which Vikram has brought out well.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is not far behind. She catches up with Vikram frame-to-fame. As a bewildered Ragini, who is kidnapped by a mighty man, she brings out the right emotions. Worked hard for her role, running in jungles, sliding from cliff. Prithviraj as Superintendent of Police looks stylish and apt for role.

The storyline is nothing new to Tamil cinema. It is basically a revenge drama. But what is entertaining is the way Mani has made the script and screenplay. Man of many accomplishments, he has ensured that it has class and mass elements in them.

Angered at their act, Ragini pours angry words. When she questions as to why he has kidnapped her and is abusing a cop, an agitated Veera narrates the reason for all his acts. In a flashback, it is revealed that the death of his sister Vennila (Priyamani) had provoked him to do so.

Vennila along with her brothers lead a happy life until her marriage is fixed. On the day of her wedding, Dev and his men enter the wedding hall and attempts to bump off Veera, who along with his brothers flee from the place hoping that Vennila would be protected by her husband. However fearing life, the bridegroom runs away leaving her. Her modesty is outraged and she is forced to end her life. Brothers then vow to avenge Dev.

Now cut to present, Ragini starts to sympathise Veera. The hot chase by cops for Veera continues until Gnanaprakasam prefers to come all alone and broker peace with Veera. In return, Sakkarai goes to meet Dev and agrees to end everything. But he is killed.

Now it is all up to an angered Veera to go hammer and tongs and teach a lesson to cops. At one point of time, Veera allows Ragini to go with her husband. But Dev makes sure Ragini meets Veera once again. What is his motive and what happened to Veera is the climax.

It has been a gripping narration from the very first frame. After 'Sethu' and 'Pithamagan', another side of Vikram's acting credentials is exposed. As Veera, he is at free touching almost every aspect of acting.

Aishwarya is pretty and comes out with her best. Prithviraj and Priyamani have taken the challenge of being part of a Mani Ratnam's film and delivered their best. John Vijay walks away doing a negative role.

Karthik as forest guard fits the role to T. His expression and body language are something interesting. Equally attracting is Prabhu. Munna as Vikram's younger sibling gets a meaty role to play, which he utilises well.

Running for little more than two hours, 'Raavanan' will go down in the history of Tamil cinema as one of the finest and best. Cheers Madras Talkies and Mani Ratnam for rendering a class movie that is racy and entertaining too.

The actress is currently on cloud nine after getting rave reviews for essaying 12 roles in Ashutosh Gowariker’s “What’s Your Rashee?”, which also stars Hurman Baweja.

“It’s been great feedback so far. People are enjoying the film...I had an author—backed role which included playing 12 different characters — very difficult to do. And it feels fantastic to be encouraged and be told that I pulled it off well,” she said.

The 27-year-old actor said she was extremely nervous before the film’s release on Friday.

“My biggest worry was — ‘Oh God! Will I ever be able to pull this off or not?’ Since most people who get to play multiple roles in a movie get it after a lot of experience, I was nervous. I have spent a short span to do roles as difficult as the one in ‘What’s Your Rashee’, but as an actor all I can say is that I do my work with as much honesty as possible and the rest is destiny,” she said.

If “What’s Your Rashee?” hits the jackpot at the box office, it will be her fourth consecutive hit in a row after “Fashion”, “Dostana” and “Kaminey”.

But she is unmoved. “Hits and flops are a part of the business, isn’t it?” she said.

Asked how she handles success at a young age, the former Miss World said: “I have always been grounded. I have an incredible passion for what I do (acting). I don’t know how to do anything else, I don’t want to do anything else and I love what I do. There’s nothing else that affects me.”

What about growing expectations from audiences and critics?

“It scares me when my films release. I wonder if people will like it or not. That for me is the most important thing. But at the same time I think: what’s the point of living a life without any expectations? You will just stagnate, become complacent — that’s not the kind of person I am. I like striving, I like things that challenge me; I take up difficult films and difficult roles to challenge myself,” Priyanka said.

“I like it when people say things like ‘Fashion’ was a female—centric movie and yet it was successful and that ‘Kaminey’ was an all—boys film, still my part was really appreciated, and ‘Dostana’ was majorly on gay guys, and it ended so well. I enjoy that — I like the fact that I can take up different scripts.

“It’s just that I like to take up challenges,” she added.

Prakash Raj’s much acclaimed Tamil film ‘Abhiyum Naanum' inspired by Steve Martin’s ‘Father of the Bride’ is going to be the next hot property in Bollywood from south. Prakash Raj -Trisha starrer ‘Abhiyum Naanum’ celebrates the father-daughter relationship. The 2008 movie directed by Radha Mohan brought critical accolades for both Prakash Raj and Trisha.

Later Prakash Raj himself remade the film in Kannada as ‘Nannu Nanna Kanasu’ which also launched him as a director for the first time. Amoolya and Prakash Raj played the roles Trisha and Prakash respectively.

Now Prakash Raj is taking the film to Bollywood and planning a remake in Hindi. Prakash Raj will only produce and direct the Hindi version and not act in the Hindi version according to his office sources. The cast and crew are still to be decided.

Last couple of days has been a testing time for Asin. According to some media reports Asin was dropped from the ‘Kaakha Kaakha’ Hindi remake. Producer of ‘Kaakha Kaakha’ Hindi remake Vipul Shah also is said to have confirmed that Asin is out of his film. Asin’s second Hindi flick ‘London Dreams’ was for Vipul.

There are many reasons floating for Asin’s ouster from the film. One says John Abraham refused to romance Asin feeling she is not sexy enough and he wanted a change. The other one is ‘Kaakha Kaakha’ is also a thrilling, fast-paced action flick with a strong romantic angle like that of ‘Ghajini’. So there may be a comparison if Asin plays the heroine in this too. The third one is she out because she’s busy doing Anees Bazmee’s ‘Ready’ opposite Salman Khan.

But sources close to Asin say a different story. But a prominent person from Tamil film industry briefed her about the happenings here and stopped her at the eleventh hour from taking a flight to Colombo, sources say.

He is none other than producer 'Aascar' Ravichandran, sources reveal and add: "He was the one who saved Genelia from being issued a red card. Because he has roped in the actress for 'Velayudham', his forthcoming film with Vijay."

"It was only after Ravichandran cautioned Genelia not to attend the IIFA, she decided to stay back. She was quick to realise the gravity of the situation and knew that she might lose out on a big film if she went ahead", sources point out.

Meanwhile, reports have it that the actress was in Chennai on Sunday and completed a photo-shoot with Vijay at Balu Mahendra’s studio.

Singam Film Review

I dont know what makes singam stand apart from Vettaikaran or Sura. Nevertheless, I liked it. The movie could be called as Saamy II for its racy screenplay.

Few things that were monotonous and could be avoided. Intro scene for hero and Villain, The song sequences amidst the racy screenplay, which remind me of As I am suffering from fever I need leave for 2 days & I am going for pondicherry scene from tamil padam, Mokkai jokes of Vivek, Hero blackmailed or tortured by doing some harm to heroine. I am not saying that the other scenes were not monotonous, but atleast they were enjoyable. Punch dialogues would be good even when soft spoken(read not loudly spoken). Music, Sorry, but I will wait for a day for DSP to give songs like that of Arya II in tamil.

Surya perfectly fitted to his role. Anushka is just like any other dumb girl shown in tamil cinema for umpteen number of times. All scenes associated with her was crap. Particularly the scene when she advises surya to continue to be a cop brought me some headache. I liked on scene of her, when she talks to her father abt license though. All veteran actors like Nazar, Radharavi, Vijaykumar, Manorama, Nizhalgal ravi, Bose were wasted. But you can't expect a class performance from them in a movie like singam. Prakashraj was good, but it was irritating when i saw him uttering the dialogue "ethu en kotta da". Atleast rephrase or paraphrase the dialogue so that it doesnt remind u of any previous movies.

Now when I think of something good I can say about the movie, I couldn't think of one. But it was watchable if not adorable movie for movie. It could be the lead performances(No offence meant to Vijay here, he has a better screen presence than Surya) or well made screenplay, that could make a difference between a Singam and Sura/Vettaikaran vagayara's....

I am sure anyone who watch the movie for just entertainment and usually keep their brain away while watching a movie would like this. I LIKED IT.

Tendulkar asks to Understand their body conditions first

Contradicting MS Dhoni's views, Sachin Tendulkar said IPL parties can not be blamed for India's debacle in the ICC World T20.

India could not reach the semifinals of the Twenty20 World Cup and skipper Dhoni said late night parties and continuous travelling during the Indian Premier League took a toll on the players' body.

Tendulkar, however, begged to differ and said every player should be aware of their responsibilities.
"Parties and performance are two different things that cannot be related and every player should know his responsibility," Tendulkar told reporters after laying foundation stone of an extension of Deenanath Mangeshkar hospital here.

Besides, Tendulkar said parties are not new in cricket.

"Parties used to be held even in the past," he said, laying stress on observing individual's discretion in the matter.

Tendulkar, who led Mumbai Indians to the final of IPL III, said he avoided the parties since he wanted to be fresh for the next day's match.

"I did not go for any of the IPL parties. I always wanted to be ready for the next match," he said.

Tendulkar said every player should know how his body reacts and follow certain things to carry out his duties and responsibilities.

Arguably the greatest batsman ever, Tendulkar said it was important to "understand your body" and strike a balance between play and rest.

Tendulkar also stressed on the importance of physical fitness and mental toughness which helped him to have a prolonged successful career in International cricket.

"Physical fitness helps you in being mentally tough, enhancing you confidence level," the 37-year-old said.

"When pressure builds up in the game I try to focus on the next ball with calmness without thinking of the future course of the match.
"My mood undergoes a change before every match as I start mentally preparing myself for the game," he added.

Asked if he would want his son Arjun to take up the sport, Tendulkar said he would never force him and it would be his own choice.

"It is love and passion for the game that counts. Arjun has a complete freedom to make his choices," Tendulkar said.

Tendulkar has been participating in various charity programmes of late and he said he was doing it for his own satisfaction.

"I have been supporting charities for the last 15 years.

I do it not for publicity but for my own satisfaction," he said.

Earlier, melody queen Lata Mangeshkar who has set up the hospital in the memory of her father, said Sachin deserved not just 'Bharatratna' but 'Vishwaratna' as he was a global icon.

Asked to comment on the remark, Tendulkar simply said, "Her blessings mean a lot for me".

Joachim Low's Germany side will take on Bosnia on Thursday as their final preparation for their opening game against Australia.

The match in Frankfurt's Waldstadion, just a stone's throw from the German Football Association's headquarters, is Germany's last before they fly out to South Africa on Sunday and Low is using it as a dress rehearsal for the clash with the Socceroos on June 13.

"We want to get ourselves into shape for the first group game against Australia," said Low.

"We also want to leave our fans with a football festival and get them onto our side, and we would also like to end our World Cup preparations with a success if possible."

Low may be prevented from picking his first choice XI due to a stomach bug which kept goalkeeper Manuel Neuer out of training yesterday.

Should the Schalke custodian miss out, then Tim Wiese of Werder Bremen will step in, according to the hierarchy unveiled by the goalkeeping coach Andreas Kopke.

Elsewhere in the team, Low will try out his new central midfield pair of Sami Khedira and Bastian Schweinsteiger, although they have never played together from the start before and the pair have been getting to know each other in training this week.

"It is a shame that we did not have more time to get used to playing together, but I cannot see any fundamental problems," said Schweinsteiger.

"I have faith in Sami's ability and good players always get on well together on the field."

Sir Geoff Hurst reckons Steven Gerrard and Wayne Rooney could be the most effective partnership for England.

Having decided on his final squad yesterday, manager Fabio Capello now has 10 days to decide on his starting XI before England take on the USA in Phokeng on June 12.

For the majority of his time in charge, the Italian has chosen to adopt a 4-4-2 formation with Rooney being partnered by a targetman usually in the shape of either Emile Heskey or Peter Crouch.

Capello has tinkered with his formation at times though by choosing to employ a 4-5-1 formation with an attacking midfielder positioned just behind Manchester United striker Rooney.

Gerrard is familiar with that role having played there all season supporting the Reds talisman Fernando Torres, making him an ideal candidate for the role at international level according to 1966 World Cup hero Hurst.
"I am convinced that 4-5-1 is the formation he should play," he said.

"I think that our best combination up front to compete with the best would be Rooney and Gerrard - they would arguably be the best partnership in world football.

"Wayne has played well on his own up front. If you had asked me two years ago then I would've told you he wouldn't be able to do it. He has had a magnificent season though and for a lot of the games he has played up front alone in that system.

"I think Steven Gerrard's best position is where he plays for Liverpool - just off Fernando Torres.

"He and Wayne already have a tremendous working relationship. I've seen that when they play for England. They haven't played too many games up front together but when they have there have been instances where they have shown a good understanding and together I think they can be a very dangerous pairing, certainly towards the latter part of the tournament."

Fears about Rooney's participation in the tournament were raised when the Manchester United striker picked up ankle and groin injuries towards the end of the Barclays Premier League season.

United's top scorer has also struggled with his form for England recently, failing to find the net in his last six internationals.

That is not a worry to Hurst, however, who believes that the 24 year old can end the tournament as top scorer if he stays fit and gets the support he needs from the rest of the team.

"I'm not worried about his form, not at all," said Hurst.

"Overall he has been fine. He is capable of scoring goals. A good player doesn't lose his form overnight.
"He's up there with the best, then and now. He will perform when it matters and I think in the bigger games we will see what he is capable of producing.

"The last few games have been friendlies and it's hard to get yourself up for these matches. If he stays fit he will be successful.

"He can be top goalscorer if England perform well then he is quite capable of having a run, it depends on the team.

"The strikers get the benefits of the football that the team is playing and the chances that they create. If we do that then he will knock in his fair percentage. I don't know what odds he is but you wouldn't back against him."

Hurst believes that this summer's tournament will be the last shot at World Cup glory for some members of the England squad.

He said: "This is the last chance that England will have to win it for a while because you have key players in there who could be playing their last World Cup - players like John Terry, Rio Ferdinand, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and maybe Ashley Cole. They will be hard to replace.

"I'm optimistic though. I think that had the team been managed better they could have won it last time. We have a real chance of making at least the semi-finals."

Srilanka Registers a huge Win

Captain Tillakaratne Dilshan cracked an unbeaten 60 to lead Sri Lanka to a comprehensive nine-wicket victory over Zimbabwe in a rain-curtailed one-dayer in the Tri-Series at Bulawayo.

Chasing 119 for a win from 26 overs, Dilshan took the inexperienced Zimbabwe bowlers to the cleaners with his 45-ball innings which contained seven fours and a six.

He was given able support by his opening partner Upul Tharanga (37-ball 40) as Sri Lanka romped home with 10.4 overs to spare at the Queens Sports Club here.

Earlier, off-spinner Suraj Randiv led a disciplined Sri Lankan bowling charge with three scalps to skittle Zimbabwe out for 118 in 24.5 overs after Dilshan won the toss and inserted the home side.

The match was reduced to a 26-over affair after the start was delayed by more than four hours due to rain.

Tharanga and Dilshan, who stitched an 86-run opening stand, almost clinched the issue for Sri Lanka, but the opening combo came to an end when wicketkeeper Brendan Taylor found Tharanga short of the crease in 11th over. Tharanga cracked six fours during his breezy 37-ball innings.

Maanja Velu Film Review

The Malai Malai team is back again, expecting to recreate or even better the success they had the first time round. For their second outing, they have chosen to remake a Telugu super hit Lakshyam which looks to satisfy all kinds of audiences. Maanja Velu is a venture that is laden with an array of stars and familiar faces and Feather Touch Entertainments has not left any stone unturned to make sure that their second outing doesn’t fall short of their previous effort.

Maanja Velu tells the story of a happy family. Arun Vijay is the youngest son of the family and Karthik (hot on a comeback trail) is his elder brother. Anu Haasan plays Karthik’s wife. Karthik is an honest and righteous cop and this guarantees that there are quite a few criminals baying for his blood. Karthik’s adversaries plot a way of finishing him. Does he walk into the trap? What happens after and how Arun Vijay gets involved in this and gets even with the criminals forms the story of Maanja Velu in a nutshell.

Maanja Velu is a fine mix of all the elements that go towards making a mass masala entertainer. There is the happy family, romance, and ample scope for comedy, oodles of sentiments, action and revenge. Having been adapted from a super hit Telugu movie, one does expect Maanja Velu to deliver, but it does seem to lack that vital punch which would have made it a sure bet at the box office. One feels that director A. Venkatesh (in charge of the screenplay) could have had a better grip on the proceedings. Having said that, Maanja Velu is hardly a bad or boring movie. It has got a screenplay that maintains consistent tempo and some top class performers who make it worth a watch.

Talking about the cast will take some doing because of the array of artistes present. But, first one has to discuss Karthik. If anyone has to know the meaning of a great comeback, then they have to go and watch Karthik in Maanja Velu. He surprises and delights. Surprises, because after all these years of oblivion he has come back looking just as dashing and charming as he was in his heydays. Delightful, because Tamil cinema has been missing this kind of an actor for sometime now. One great thing about this comeback is that like many other lead actors of his time, Karthik has not resurfaced as a senior character artiste. Looking at him in Maanja Velu, one feels that he is good enough to reemerge as a lead star all over again. At many points in the movie he rolls back the years and his fans (there were quite a few of them in the audience) were in raptures, especially when he danced to ‘Rajadhi Raja’ song from ‘Agninatchathiram’. All in all, this is one of the best comebacks of the decade and we hope he is here to stay.

Arun Vijay has very evidently worked out of his skin to bring out a good product. The effort can be seen in the way he has improved in the dance and fight sequences. He, along with Karthik, carries the movie effectively on their shoulders well close to the climax where Prabhu appears as a police officer and adds immense value. In a short role, Prabhu shows how experienced and classy he is, a fine cameo. Others in the cast, including Vijayakumar (as Arun Vijay’s father) and Anu Haasan are apt for their roles, while Kota Sreenivasa Rao is as convincing as ever as the villain. Comic acts by Ganja Karuppu and Santhanam are enjoyable at points, with the latter scoring well. But, there are points where the jokes fall flat. All said and done, casting is definitely one of the strongest points of Maanja Velu.

One element present in pretty strong doses in Maanja Velu is glamour and that has been taken care of by Thanshika. Three songs seem to have been tailor made for glamour parades and they have been exploited to the full. One wonders how it will go down with the families.

The technical crew has supported the movie well, but there is nothing spectacular. But, the producer’s commitment towards delivering a quality product is evident at many points, especially the locations in which the songs have been shot.

Maanja Velu is an entertainer that aims to satisfy all types of audiences and A. Venkatesh has managed to create a screenplay that takes care of all requirements. But, there is a feeling that the full potential of the script has not been realized. It is still a decent entertainer which can be watched especially for its wonderful casting.

Verdict: Balanced commercial mix

The Cinema PRO Association’s elections were conducted recently and Vijay Murali was selected as the President of this association. Peru Thulasi Pazhanivel was selected as the secretary and Aadhampakkam Ramdas has been elected as the Treasurer.

VP Mani and Madurai Selvam are the two new vice-presidents of the Cinema PRO Association. The joint secretaries are Balan, Govindaraj, Glamor Sathya, Diamond Babu and Venkatraman.

All those that have been elected to office met the biggies of Kollywood, including the Producer’s Council President Rama Narayanan to seek his wishes. The dance master couple Lalitha-Mani has worked with several stalwarts of the Tamil film industry including Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Sathyaraj, Sarath Kumar and others. It is now time to bring in the next-gen into the industry with which they are associated with.

Lalitha-Mani’s son Rahul is entering into Kollywood with Vavaal Kottai. And debuting with him is Malayalam actress Urmila Unni’s daughter Uthra.

Jerome Pushparaj has scored the music for this film and the dances have been choreographed by Dhina and Arul. YN Murali has wielded the camera and Gopi Krishna is in charge of Vavaal Kottai’s editing. The art direction is by Siva Yadav. Kabilan has penned the lyrics.

Director Suresh, who has films like Sabari and Arasu to his credit, is directing this film.

Raavan's First impression

The ‘first look promotional’ event of Mani Ratnam’s Raavanan was held today at the Lady Andal school grounds. It was a brief but captivating capsule that lasted just about an hour, 7:45 to 8:45 p.m, to be precise. The event was supposed to be a belated audio launch function. The audio of Raavanan was officially released a few days back and has received some great response.
Today’s event was colorful and energetic and in a way reflected the mood of the film. The stage erected for the event resembled a dense forest. The highlight of the event were the live performances. First it was singer Karthik’s turn to mesmerize the audience with his rendition of the melancholically romantic ‘Usure Pogudhe’ as he emerged from the thickets of the forest. Then, Vikram infused huge energy into the audience as he danced to the power packed ‘Kodu potta’ number. The performances were rounded off with a delightful combination of Kaviperarasu Vairamuthu and Rahman. As the former read out lines he had written; Varuven Naane Meendum Varuven; Rahman put the lines to tune and sang them. The song is not part of the Raavanan audio CD, but we hope it will be part of the movie.

Finally, the trailer and song clippings were screened which instantly created a lot of excitement. The small portions that were screened suggested that Raavanan will be a high quality, high impact product which should not be missed.

The event was anchored by actor Karthik and Priyamani while others from the cast like Prithviraj and Prabhu shared their experiences during the making of the film with the audience. Almost the entire cast and crew of Raavanan were present at the event including cinematographer Santhosh Sivan.

No more problem for Manja Velu

The producer of Thunichal, Dr. P Kalidas filed for a stay order against the release of the Arun Vijay starrer Maanja Velu citing reasons that the actor was responsible for the losses he incurred. Dr. P Kalidas had alleged that Arun Vijay made certain demands for the release of Thunichal and failed to dub for the movie due to which he suffered losses amounting to several lakhs. He, therefore, sought a stay order for Maanja Velu’s release.

When this issue was brought before the court, the producer of Maanja Velu, Dr Mohan said that the stay order for his film would do great injustice to him as there was no dispute between him and P Kalidas. Following this, the petitioner told the court that they would withdraw the case. Maanja Velu will now hit the screens as planned.

UN sees 3 IDIOTS

A special screening of 3 Idiots was held at the UN Headquarters in New York on May 14th. It is learnt that the management department of the UN contacted the 3 Idiots’ director Raj Kumar Hirani to arrange for the screening after coming to know of the film. Hirani and his co-writer Abhijat Joshi interacted with the UN officials after the screening to assert the movie’s impact on them.
3 Idiots was screened in the Indian Film Festival 2010 at the Federation Square in Melbourne, Australia earlier this year.

The director said that he is honored that 3 Idiots has been selected for the prestigious screening in the UN headquarters.

Seeman's Political Announcement

Seeman’s organization Naam Tamilar Iyakkam will be formally launched into a political party. The director announced it recently and mentioned that the formal launch of the party will happen in the conference to be held in Madurai on May 18. Seeman also stated that this is a politically significant event and that his party’s priority will be to fight for the rights of the internally displaced Tamils in the island nation.

Rahman's opinion About New Anthem

Rahman convened a press meet at the Chennai Press Club just before the release event of the anthem that he composed for the forthcoming World Classical Tamil Conference to be held in Coimbatore in June. He revealed that he had to squeeze the composition of this anthem between his tight schedules. “But I’m happy with the outcome,” he further added.

The anthem is sung by as many as 30 singers, significant of them including the legendary TMS, Yuvan Shankar Raja, G V Prakash, Shruti Hassan, Naresh Iyer and Chinmayi. Recording of the song and shooting of the video were done recently. It’s also revealed in the press meet that the song starts with TMS voice.
